The Berlin dataset consists of more than 30 years of daily (every two days in
summer) geopotential height and temperature fields at 50, 30 and 10hPa in the
northern hemisphere. The hemispheric analyses were produced in real time by
a subjective analysis technique, using the 00UT radiosonde reports from the
observational network, by a team of experienced meteorologists.
Both geostrophic and hydrostatic balance were assumed in the analysis
procedure, and the wind observations were given a high priority.
The imposition of these balance conditions ensures a
consistent dataset; further, temporal continuity is assured by meteorological
inspection. Note that
these balance conditions can result in, say, temperatures which deviate from the
local radiosonde reports, which include meso-scale structures as well as any random
or systematic observational errors. The Berlin analyses thus represent the
synoptic-scale structure of the lower and middle stratosphere. geopotential height from November 1964 to June 2001 temperatures from July 1965 to June 2001 NOTES
If you want individual access to the Berlin Data as plots, here's the way: If you need access to the original gridded Berlin Data, you now have the possibility to download the CD-image file of the Berlin Stratospheric Data Series.
Members of the Stratospheric Reseach Group can The analyses of the stratospheric fields discontinued in June 2001. All available Data, daily and monthly mean analyses as well as climatological averages, are included on a CD and are now available. To get an idea of the CD contents, please visit the online version of The Berlin Stratospheric Data Series. You can get access to a CD-image file via anonymous ftp:
ftp://strat50.met.fu-berlin.de/pub/bdataCD/bdata.iso.gz
After you have downloaded the CD-image, uncompress it. Then it can
directly be used to create a CD with every kind of CD-burning
software.
To monitor the daily development of the
stratospheric circulation over the northern hemisphere, we provide
some analyses and different stratospheric parameters based on the
ECMWF-data. The former STRATALERT
messages are no longer submitted. But the winter diagnostics can
still give an overview of the current state of the northern hemisphere
stratospheric circulation. The analyses span the period from November 1 to April 30. The analyses of the most recent 5 days can be accessed here. |
